When We Marry The Wrong Person: Love and Divorce.

This is all the ‘stuff’ about love and dating and marriage and divorce that we don’t get to see unless we live it, or unless someone bares their soul and lets us into their inside life. Love is enough… Love conquers all…
My young heart took these statements into my marriage and lugged them around for 22 years. I knew before I ever said, “I do” that God was saying, “Don’t.” But I married anyway, and I paid a heavy price.
The first four years of marriage were blissful, and then it started. The cycle was always the same – he would accuse, I would cry, I would reason, we would talk, he would apologize – I’m so sorry. I know you’ve never cheated on me. I don’t know what’s wrong with me – and I would forgive. Over and over for 18 years my husband accused me of having multiple affairs. With every painful accusation, every cutting look, through each hellish argument I told myself, it will be okay because we love each other. I didn’t see that things weren’t even close to being okay.
I soon understood why God had said, “Don’t.”
I still remember the first accusation; I was shocked, blindsided, dumbfounded. I didn’t even know how to react. An affair?! Me?! I had never even had any offers or an inappropriate conversation with another man. I was never unfaithful, but that didn’t matter. My husband was my accuser. He was the source of my pain and my comfort. He was my best friend and my worst enemy.
Bad was mingled with good, hurt intertwined with love.
Years went by, our children came and grew and life seemed normal. But normal in my marriage wasn’t normal at all. My husband never laid a hand on me, but I was terrified of him. His words and eyes cut me deeper and did more damage than his fists ever could have. Physical wounds would have healed much sooner than the gaping cuts my heart walked around with. Maybe if he could have seen that I was battered and bleeding inside, he wouldn’t have repeatedly demanded that I “just get over it.”
Even when things were great between us, I was acutely aware that it all could go south in a heartbeat. I walked on eggshells all day, every day. The ache in my heart was constant. I cried more than I care to remember. All I had ever wanted out of life was to be married and have kids. I used to think, I guess I got my wish, but this is not what I had in mind.
On the outside, my marriage looked fine.
My kids were happy, and I was smiling. I wanted to be okay, so I acted like I was okay. Only God knew I was going through hell. No one at church knew, not even my family. I was completely isolated. I was a genius at covering up my pain. Survival mode said, “Preserve the marriage; protect the kids,” and I did.
I was then and am now deeply in love with Jesus. I love my kids dearly. They’re so great, and I love being a mom. I loved being married in spite of the junk. I was happy in spite of living in fear every day. I was full of joy and yet hopelessly sad. I didn’t want a divorce, I only wanted my husband to stop treating me so terribly. I wanted him to trust me. I wanted him to believe in me. To see into my heart and know that I truly loved him. To know that all my heart was for my family.
I was desperate for him to know, once and for all, that the affairs he imagined in his mind never happened, and that his suspicions were unwarranted. I wanted him to stop taking back his apology with the next accusation. I wanted him to be the good man that I knew he could be.
I told myself the same things that I’m sure most do, “But we’re Christians. If I pray enough, hope enough, believe enough…I know God can fix this. Divorce is not the plan!
And divorce is never the plan.
I know that God can fix a troubled marriage and that nothing is too hard for Him. I know He is the Great Physician and healer of all hurt. I know of His life-changing power. This knowledge kept me going, gave me hope and kept me sane. God will not, however, force someone to change.
I remember the day this realization hit me like a truck. If a person isn’t willing to change, change will not happen. No matter how much I prayed for God to change my husband, to change me, or how much I tried to adapt to this ever-changing/always-the-same situation, it was never enough. I told myself, If my words, expressions and actions are just right, he won’t suspect me of having an affair. If I just try to be the perfect wife, maybe then he will see that I really do love him. But no matter what I did, nothing changed. It never dawned on me that I was in an abusive relationship. My every move was controlled, and I didn’t even realize it.
The abuse escalated during the last three years of the marriage. The accusations became more disgusting, more harsh and more frequent. His words and eyes grew more violent. No one has ever looked at me or spoken to me with more contempt than my husband. My husband – the one who promised before God to cherish and protect me. The one who should know me better than anyone. How could he hate me so much one minute and love me so much the next?
I prayed repeatedly, How much of this do I have to take?! When will things change?! Each time I heard God softly tell me to stay. To this day I don’t know why, but I knew I couldn’t leave him. God didn’t remove me from the situation when I would have chosen, but He sustained me. He was so faithful to hold me and wipe my tears. Every. Time. Never. Failing.
And then one day, out of the blue, God said, “It’s time.”
I didn’t have to ask, “Time for what?” He didn’t have to tell me twice. I knew exactly what He meant, and I ran. I ran and didn’t look back. Some may argue that God would never tell a person to leave a marriage, but I have no doubt that had I stayed, the abuse would have become physical. I believe God rescued me that day.
I literally felt like I had been let out of a cage. I felt so free and yet so afraid! The thought of being a single mom kind of terrified me, and I was so concerned about my kids. Accusations continued to fly, and no matter what I did to protect my children and their ears, they were not to be immune from the lies. But a full year before the day of my escape, God had spoken to me very clearly. He said, “Don’t worry about your kids; I’ve got them. I love them more than you do.” Little did I know then how much those words would impact my life. I have clutched them so tightly, and they have brought me great peace.
I would love to tell you that my husband changed. I would love to tell you that we worked things out and my marriage was saved. But that is not the case. I learned some hard lessons when I disobeyed God all those years ago when I married him.
I learned that love does not conquer all. I learned that love is not enough.
Love does not always ‘fix.’
I said earlier that no matter what I did, nothing changed. That’s not entirely true. I changed.
God took my disobedience and exchanged it for priceless truth. He taught me how to run to Him, and every time He met me with strength and wisdom that I did not possess on my own. I learned how to pray and trust on an entirely different level. I learned that real worship doesn’t just happen on a warm and fuzzy Sunday morning. Real worship happens when you remain faithful in the trenches day after day even though your life is falling apart around you. I learned what it means to be truly happy despite your circumstances.
Real joy comes from God alone and cannot be taken from you when life gets hard. Little by little, year after year, through stubborn determination, I learned. I learned what real love is. You see, the truth is, I did have a love affair. I fell so desperately in love with God during those awful years, and that is how I survived. I had no one else to turn to. God was all I had, and I learned that He is all I need.
I learned that His love conquers all, and that His love is enough.
I disobeyed God and walked willingly into a situation with an outcome I could never have foreseen. But God, in His grace and mercy, didn’t abandon me. He followed me. He took my hand and walked with me on my journey, even though it was not His plan. He protected me and comforted me.
He never once said, “I told you so.”
He never once – not one time – left my side. He has never condemned me. He is gentle in His correction and passionate in His love for me.
I will be your God throughout your lifetime — until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you. (Isaiah 46:4)
I am not advocating divorce. I hope that is not what you take from my story. I want to impress upon you the unconditional love of a God who passionately pursues us. A God who redeems all of our mistakes. A God who runs after us into our storm with an umbrella and an anchor. He is our refuge and our strength (Psalm 46:1). God is our rock, our fortress, our deliverer (Psalm 18:2). He will never leave us or abandon us (Hebrews 13:5) even in our disobedience.
And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore, confirm, strengthen and establish you. (1 Peter 5:10)
Three years have passed since God brought me out of that situation. He has taken me on a journey of healing that has been so amazing. I no longer live in fear or feel the incredible pain that was my constant companion for nearly my entire adult life. He has put my heart back together, replacing the missing pieces with pieces of His own heart. He has wiped away my regrets and my shame along with my tears. He is my perfect husband who knows me better than anyone. He cherishes me and protects me, and I am precious to Him. He speaks only words of life, and if I could see His eyes, I know they would be filled, not with hatred or contempt, but with great love. He is the forever faithful love of my life. I know this today more than ever before.
For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty Savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With His love, He will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs. (Zephaniah 3:17)
I hope that you feel the love of God today and every day no matter where you are in life or what you are going through. In gain and lack, in peace and turmoil, in hope and despair, God is a good God. He loves you unconditionally. This is my prayer for you always.
I pray that from His glorious, unlimited resources He will empower you with inner strength through His Spirit. Then Christ will make His home in your heart as you trust in Him. That your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. (Ephesians 3:16-19)

Thank you, thank you thank you for this, Tracy!!!! For a couple years I have been struggling with my questions to God on why did He end a relationship I really wanted, why did the man I wanted to marry broke up with me…His answer has always been: Be obedient, for I know what I'm doing. I'm keeping you, even from yourself. As I read your story, something's confirmed in my heart: Obedience must, sometimes, be completely blind, because HE KNOWS BETTER.
But the best thing about His love is what God does in stories like yours: Even when we mess up, even when we don't listen…He's merciful, and turns our mistakes into something better than our choices. I'm sure He has great things in store for you!

I have to admit that when I began reading this post I expected to disagree with it- especially given the title. As I read though, and was invited into the very intimate details of your heart, I found so much truth and beauty in your words. Divorce is never the plan, but it is very evident how much you love and trust God, and your obedience in staying in the marriage until he told you it was time is so encouraging.
My heart has been softened today towards you and all Christians who have been through divorce. thank you so much for listening to the Spirit and writing these words which are undoubtedly from Him.

Gosh, I am so sorry that you experienced that. It does sound like hell. I really admire when women tell the truth about their stories – the mistakes, the hurt, the pain. I think I learn more from these stories than I do the "how to get what you want and have a perfect life" ones. Scratch that, I KNOW I learn more. I really value your story. I really value the grace that covers the choices you made, and I really value the perspective God has given you as you've walked through all of this. Thank you!!

Wow, that is so totally my story! I can't believe it…except mine was physical, very ugly..but he was a prophet, he would hold healing/prophecy seminars at our church and others…I thought I must be crazy. He was a godly man…I,like you, feel God instructed me to leave my husband and if I had not listened I would be dead today. Thank you for your story!

Tracy, thank you for writing this. I was engaged to a man who was emotionally abusing me, and praise God the relationship ended before we were married (he told me I was too unstable to marry because I got to the point where I was crying everyday from the hurtful lies he would tell me about myself). After it ended I have slowly been putting together the pieces of what happened and have found many websites offering support for abuse survivors helpful, but do not see many stories that show that you can be abused even when no one is touching you. Sharing your story will help many others recognize and break free from or avoid similar situations.

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I love hearing how you were so obedient to God. My parents lived out your story very closely but sadly it did end with an affair (after 37 years of marriage). There were so many people worried that I would marry a man like my dad, but God is so gracious and I married a super fantastic man. I still don't have a relationship with my dad and probably never will, but I have such hope for when we have kids one day because my husband adores children and will be a terrific father. There is always a place for healing. Sometimes we just need to make space for it. Thanks again for sharing.

I ended a relationship with some similar characteristics to your marriage a few years ago and have wondered from time to time if I should reach out to him again, hoping it may work. I began praying for guidance and soon thereafter you posted this! I think God was speaking to me through your story and it brought tears to my eyes as I could imagine myself in your shoes. It appears that my opinion is in the minority.
My parents were also in an emotionally abusive relationship. My mother was NEVER struck, but absent of the issue being accusations of adultery, the same "walking on needles" situation existed between her and my dad (and for us children as well). I am PROUD of my mother for choosing to set a strong example of following-through with her commitment to marriage. Her reward (and mine as well)???? After 40+ years of marriage, my father became ill. The illness was one that was a 3+ year slow progression to his passing. During those three years, he required love and caretaking from my mother. Her continued devotion to my father changed him. Their last years were ones of love and caring. My father became strong in faith…a faith he had never had in his life. He passed in peace, and as a strong Christian.
Had my mother "taken the easy way out", and looked selfishly at her own needs (versus her commitment to God and her marriage), there may be one additional soul (my father's) which would now not be in heaven.

This is an excellent article! I would like to say that unless you have personally been through a divorce, you cannot imagine the pain it causes. And to the person who said that divorce is the easy way out, obviously you have not lived with an abusive person for many many years. Abuse comes in all forms, physical, mental and emotional. Mine was mental and emotional. I prayed that it would be physical so that I could have a "biblical reason" to leave. I am a very strong Christian and was judged by many friends and family members. Because I too was strong and did what I had to do to survive. Until my father died and then I couldn't keep it together any longer. When I confronted my ex about the abuse and try to work through our issues, he informed me that it was "all my fault" and he had done nothing wrong. In fact, he never once apologized to me for anything in our 23 years of marriage. Ever. Divorce is a painful experience for everyone else. I grow weary of legalistic Christians who judge instead of showing grace. Who says divorce is worse than lying in God's eyes? God doesn't. People are the ones that categorize. Sin is sin in God's eyes. And so thank you to the author for being honest and encouraging. And please remember that each and every situation in marriage is different and God's knows that and how things will work out in the end long before we do. Everyone on this earth is a sinner, Christians are just forgiven sinners. So let's not so easily judge divorced Christians. Only God knows what goes on behind closed doors. Concentrate on the sin in your own life instead of judging others.

Reading this, the tears just started flowing on me. I think I no what I am doing by staying for the kids sake, but in reality the cycle just keeps worsening. My kids don't want to leave there home so we stay. The last two weeks have been fine, but today the shit started again and the wonderful family vacation I have planned he is taking away, well at least for today. I try to keep the peace for all of our sakes and it is killing me inside. It is so hard to pretend to like someone that you hate.~Martha

You are so strong for sharing this! My heart cried for you reading this, I am still young and wanting to hopefully one day find my right person. This shows me that although someone may seem right at first, I should always listen to what God says, as he will guide me when I am in doubt.
You sound like a wonderful mother and I think you have such a incredible strong connection to the Lord.

So what you are saying is I need to tell my son even a women that calls herself christian and speaks of god still is not someone to entrust a lifetime commitment to. I read an article that described a woman saying god said it was ok and right to betray her husband's commitment so she could be happy. I sure hope young adolescent christian boys and young men are reading this and learn a lesson in life. Most important I hope they see the affirmation from other christian women so they don't fall for the all women aren't like that game.

Lollers, don't get married folks, God is the complete husband no man can compete with, don't even bother. Really, you can't make it up. According to you, God spoke directly to you, convincing you to leave your marriage, which you did. Well howdy do, you were cheating, with your make believe God. Now, I believe in God but I'm under no illusion that God speaks to me directly. He doesn't. I'm not a prophet, neither are you. That is just your own little voice telling you to leave your marriage because you were not happy. Well whateva, marriage has become a joke. Kids don't matter, yours will be scarred, don't you worry. Just by leaving, you've stripped them of their father and 5 years directly from their life. Well done, God would indeed be proud because, according to you, he hates your husband who could not be saved…

It is amazing how man "christian" women around me have openly declared that God has released them from their marriages. I was wondering if this was just some stupidity that was aquired from the local drinking water, but apparently not. As greyghost already stated, this serves as a warning to any actual christian men out there. Her happiness outweighs anything she has already promised and she will rationalize and manipulate until she gets her way, though the heavens fall. Right now, she's got all of Team Woman and the entire world media on her side to back her up and label her a hero. One day, it will be her and her alone standing before God almighty to give account for her actions with no one to back her up. Red Pill men are getting better and better at blowing through illogical arguments, but our skills are nothing compares to Him that sits on the throne. He said "I hate divorce". Good luck getting around that one.

Divorce is obviously a sin she will have to bear the consequences of. It is just as bad as all the sins we Christians still commit, despite being "saved." (We will still be disciplined by God).
Likewise, her husband will also have to face the consequences of his sins in breaching the marriage contract, that he was supposed to love his wife as Christ loves the church. We shall all be whipped and chastised as needed.

I was inspired by this story. My husband does this to me, the accuses you of cheating. Never thought someone else would be going through the exact same thing. There is the beauty of humanity. And the evil of Satan; he always makes you feel like you are alone. So again I thank you for sharing.

Tracey I admire you’re courage for posting this, because I was once that guy you speak of before I met the “Jesus I never knew existed.” I never hit my wife but the hatred, verbal, emotional abuse was way worse on the poor thing. She still hasn’t met Jesus but I pray for her often. But that’s pretty expected as neither my wife nor I knew anything but a passive “twear”(twice a year at Christmas and Easter) catholic relationship with God. I prayed for a week or so before posting and I would love to engage in some loving, encouraging, constructive conversation on this. Reason being you see many comments on both side of the fence of this issue and I believe I can shed some spirit filled light on this type of situation. I would hope if your heart just got hard, or any of the other women reading this are slightly taken aback by a guy named “Mugsy” giving spirit filled relationship guidance that you would pray for God to soften your heart as my intentions are not to push fault at you or anyone for that matter but to offer encouragement that there may be a way for women struggling in this type of situation to face God and their spouse in a different way in the midst of difficult circumstances and challenge them both as many have in the bible. I was shocked at how poorly Christian’s handle their relationships when I became one a little over 7 years ago. I’ve never seen a segment of society wrap themselves up in a “silky white Christian cocoon’s” and separate themselves from the rest of society.
So if you could answer me these questions I would appreciate it. Firstly was or is your ex husband a Christian(and I use the term loosely)? When you were dating did you think enough of each other to spell out to each other expectations in the relationship? Did you have biblical guidance from friends or mentors? And when I say biblical, I don’t mean the one that tells you to do 180 degrees opposite of what Jesus says in it. Please don’t take that disrespectfully, but if we’re being honest many Christians use scripture to justify ridiculous behavior. Westboro Baptist church is the one’s everyone is familiar with. As much as I totally understand your side of the story, when you first noticed the change over your husband coming did either of you have weekly or bi-weekly mentoring sessions with people from your church? If you didn’t? Why not? If you did? Did they help in the slightest? As much as God loves you’re as his gem, and he does. He loves your husband as well just as much. Did you try to at least get him any help he needs by attending relational counseling together? Hatred, Jealousy, Envy are destructive in our lives and when they come in did you help him identify the emotion he was feeling? Did you help him at all identify why he was feeling it? Did you try to help him find the issue that started it all for him? Once you determined these things did you pray passionately for God to heal that pain in his heart? Because if you heal the pain in the heart? You heal the man/woman and God will heal the destructive behavior/sin that manifests from it. When you tried to show love to him how was it received? Did the 2 of you seem to be constantly at odds with each other? Did it seem like everything you said was received by him 180 opposite of the intended delivery?
I certainly don’t wanna take away from the incredible work you do for women who have struggled in poor relationships. But love to be able to offer a suggestion after I received your answers to those who are in a similar situation that may help not only their relationship with God, but all of their relationships. Because again I don’t want this to be a “beat up on Christian day” because I am one, if you watch the Christians in your life externally and internally they handle all of their relationships consistently. You may notice if they are “clicky” at church, they have very few unchurched people in their life. You may notice those who live through the spirit handle their relationships with the lost in correlation of how they handle relationships inside the 4 walls of their life. God bless you, and may he protect your ministry.

This is my story. I’ve been married for 8 years and for 8 years my husband has accused me of cheating. Never in my life have I cheated on my husband. I even went as far as suggesting a lie detector test. Nothing I ever did could convince this man that I was faithful. The sad part about it is I was celibate and waited for marriage. I never even kissed this man until our wedding day yet everyday he accused me of cheating. Until that fateful day that I discovered his porn addiction and soliciting women on hookup encounter websites. For seven years I endured this thinking if I prayed and waited and in God’s time things would change but it never happened. Yesterday I finally got enough strength to walk away. I packed up everything and left him on our home. The abuse was unbearable. Little by little he was chipping away at the very soul of me, but as you stated God is our perfect husband and I will trust him.

Thank you for this story because i was struggling with the divorce question. Because i know God hates divorce, even thou i felt like he was screaming for me to go , i wanted to. I was struggling with the whole divorce thing and the scriptures in the bible pertaining to divorce. I know up until know i solely made those choices and know i want god to steer my ship of life because i 've made some terrible choices in all my life choices and know i have a mess to clean up before i can move forward on all fronts of my life. Because i bought into society's message about making goals and choices for my life and being independent and not asking for help . Because that's a sign of weakness. Sometimes we do need help,, it's OK to help , it's OK to get help through prayer and advice through Godly people.
But mostly help through prayer and the holy spirit nudging or screaming at us because some of us are deaf, stubborn or both
.Anyway it's a new season and i'm ready for God to be in charge for this half of my life.

I was married we raised 3 great kids excuse me young adults. They are all 18 years or older now. I got sick flat-lined after 13 years of marriage.
My husband told me that i was suppose to take care of him, not him take care of me that's why he married a younger wife. If i couldn't work and bring in some money anymore, that we couldn't live together ever again. Moved out while i was in the hospital and did not offer a key, not sure if i really wanted one, after the things he said and the way he talked to me.
I told him i really didn't won't a divorce i still loved him, would he consider counseling with the my minster, since he didn't go to church with me. He said no it was over their was nothing to discuss, just to serve him with divorce papers when i was ready for a divorce and he wasn't paying for any of it period. Therefore i really don't feel like i have a choice anymore, God's screaming at me it's over and time to get out, and my ex confirmed it with actions and words.

Hi I really appreciate your testimony of how God sees you through even in the most darkest times. It's something we don't think about much but its when we have the most proof of God's love I think. My parents are divorce so I understand how the decision to get divorced is hard but God definitely works through it. I'm having a little bit of trouble understanding one thing. You mentioned God told you "Don't get married" and then you did. How do you know God told you not to? I'm not skeptical, just wondering. There are so many broken marriages. God told me not to marry my husband. He had been telling me for a while. I was too ashamed and embarrassed to call off our engagement. I knew there was so much we needed to work on, but I just ignored it. Those were my opportunities to be real, and honest, and vulnerable. And I just ignored them.
My marriage is difficult, as my husband is not a Christian. I knew this going into the marriage. I feel like God was pressing into my heart to break off the engagement but I didn't. My struggle now is with forgiving myself. Every time something arises in my marriage where I feel alone and broken and isolated, I tell myself, "God gave you an opportunity to leave, and you disobeyed. It's your fault and now you have to suffer the consequences." I am having trouble accepting that God has a big, wild, beautiful, and exciting plan for me when I was disobedient in marrying my husband. How can I be used to further God's kingdom and fully live out my passion for Christ when I am married to a man who does not share my faith? And I am the one who put myself there.

So you believe that God directly told you to do something that is clearly against His Word? I'm sorry, but that is not ok – I think we need to be extremely careful about slapping a "God said____" label on things, especially if it is something we clearly desire and if it in any way may possibly conflict with his word. The author of this sounded extremely bitter, and somewhat self-righteous – it would be really interesting to read her husband's side of the story as well…

Wow! I too am in a emotionally abusive relationship where in the beginning we weren’t supposed to marry but neither of us really wanted to back away from each other. Especially an aunt of mine kept insisting that I should not marry him, she never got tired of telling me. I now know why, i am suffering the consequences. Theres alot that happened before we were married, i thought I’d confess some things to him later on, well when i felt ready to tell him a few things of past relationships he immediately got mad and didnt want to hear me out, from that point on he doesn’t trust me and still carries all that in his heart. Although he’s told me that he’s past it i know he’s not because when we get in any heated argument he will always use it against me. Well I’ve been married 7yrs now and nothing changes and he’s told me that he’s here for the kids i only try to brush it aside and live like it doesn’t bother me. We look like that normal couple when we both know it’s not even close to that. I try to be a good wife and a good mother but to him it’s seems not enough. He’s religious and God speaks to him very frequently, the thing that I dont understand is if he’s relationship with God is great why can’t our relationship be it too? I am here because my marriage has come to it’s worst point and I’m just trying to find answers to see if i can still hold on to this. I cannot believe I just read this! It is my life! Exactly! Word for word. Mirror image. As I read this post I felt like I had written it myself. I’ve been struggling in my marriage & searching for answers, seeking God, seeking His will through His word & through prayer. When God speaks, when He moves, our obedience is necessary. I knew when I met my husband before we married, God told me NO, several times on several occasions but I did it anyway, knowing it wasn’t His plan. Thank you for posting this. I was looking for something to help with my confusion and pain. My daughter has been involved in a going-nowhere relationship for over a year, with someone who does not value her. Unrepentant abuse is evil and should never be tolerated. Her husband is the one who defiled the marriage…defiled and broke the commitment. Marriage IS a commitment to LOVE. It was not just created to bring about children…but to also be a type of Christ's love relationship with His church. It was meant to be a witness to the world of how Christ loves us, His bride…so the world is drawn to Christ. The abusive husband chose to break his pledge to be committed to his wife. He made the choice and already pushed and pushed and then pushed her out for good. Marriage is not a brick and mortar 'thing' and then once inside you can do exactly and whatever you want then still call marriage what God intended it to be!! The marriage in itself is not kept holy just by staying in it…it is only kept holy by behaving holy. A cruel and unholy marriage does not honor God at all. The commitment IS NOT something you do once at the alter…NO…it is an everyday thing…just like how completely committed Christ is to His bride the church everyday. The alter is only for making the initial commitment to fulfill the daily marriage vows…which IS choosing to submit to God each day and learn His kind of love and devotion so you can continue to extend them to your wife…so that your union can be a right picture of Jesus and His church. The husband already destroyed whatever marriage was there…and God knew he would not change… like how God saw that Pharaoh would not truly change either so God stepped in and decided for him. I am so sad and so sorry for those who see God as Someone who would create marriage to be an institution that should always look unscathed and pristine on the outside NO MATTER what's happening on the inside! I know that when God said He hates divorce He didn't mean this! How sad. This sounds exactly like how the Pharisees would see it too…as well as various cults I can think of.

Your story is mine. You described perfectly that still, small voice that was telling me not to marry my husband, but I did anyway and the stage was set for 24 years of heartache. The one difference in our stories is that my husband is an alcoholic whose cruel treatment of me was fueled by booze. I also prayed fervently for protection ~ especially in the last few years, as I also am convinced that physical abuse was imminent. In my case, the Lord removed him. One morning when I was at the gym, he packed his stuff and sneaked off, leaving an unsigned note in the kitchen. I believe that his leaving was ordained. No matter how the leaving or separating is done, I believe that there are many, many cases where God moves to protect His own. One day we'll understand it all, but for now, the Lord's presence in my life is more than enough.

Your story is truly inspiring, I just went through a divorce after 5 years into a marriage with a man who abused me emotionally, physically and sexually and the final stage he left me for another woman.I knew I wasn't going to let this marriage end, everyday I prayed to God to salvage my marriage, but God knew better. My family's biggest fear was that one day i might just return to them in a coffin. But God redeemed my life. Looking back before I was married there were a lot of red flags but I wanted to be color blind. I have since learned he is narcissistic. I would and still do tell myself. If only i was better. I just wanted to say how much your story inspired me. I was in a very similar situation and had the added issue that my oldest child was also being emotionally abused at a very young age and was very clearly being affected. He used to want his dad to leave even though he loved him. The similarities in your story to mine are in some details which really make me believe I have heard Gods voice in the same way. I used to cry and pray He would allow me to leave and I also felt for a time I was being told to hang on.
I did and then one day my husband was emotionally abusing my son and I just decided that was it. I didn't feel God told me to leave but I just couldn't do it anymore. I felt very worried that I had left in case it was wrong in Gods eyes. I prayed about it a lot. I spoke to a Christian counsellor and listened to sermons on divorce, terrified each time I would be condemned and I would have to go back, but determined to go with whatever God wanted. I was met with amazing understanding of my situation and love and felt that God answered me that I didn't have to go back – at least not at that time, and that He was not condemning me for leaving.
The time to follow has been difficult but the most striking similarity is that I feel that God has held my hand every step of the way, never condemning me for my mistakes and always always helping me, cushioning my blows, stopping me from giving up.

I also live with that man, that man who takes away the planned vacation, shuts the light off in the room to leave me in physical darkness,who blames me when I stand up for myself, who mocks me when I cry out for mercy, who looks at the good I do and calls it nothing. I am never enough. And although I have never believed that, I feel it from his words. The pain to be told, you are nothing. I have also prayed so earnestly, Make him hit me, God, make it so severe that I can not rationalize things to stay. How bad must things become inside when your dream of salvation is to end up in a hospital with the clear definitive signs of the abuse? I rarely cry. I am strong. And I love life. I truly do. This man will never break my spirit, but he snuffs out my joy nearly everyday. I stay because I know I could and can handle it without ever truly losing myself, but, God, in heaven, why am I doing that? Why? I don't know why. Do I not love myself enough? I don't know. I think the question I ask myself is am I allowed to love myself that much, above the vows, above our children? Because I don't see anyone else suffering but me. Can I say, am I allowed to think, that even if just for me, and my experience in this life, I can leave and never feel this way again?

Have never believed in the supernatural or talk less of spell or even voodoo. In my head there was nothing on earth that was ever going to get me involved in such thing but life as we know throw s**t at your door and some how the doors opens up and let it strike you. ************* About five years ago if anyone had asked me if i trust my twin sister with my life, believe me i would bet my life on it that i can. I couldn’t even bring myself to think that my twin sister can put a knife at my back Yes i know everything about our childhood and youth age was always about who is better that who in everything and frankly i was better that me in academic aspect of life. I was smarter more skilled that her but this ought to be no reason to want to have every guy that was dating me or should it? cos the last i checked twin protect themselves not try and hurt the other. That was what my twin sister is all about. Even though we looked identical she was cuter than i was. She had her way around boys more that i did. Like she knew how to get what she want in whatever way she wanted it from both boys and girls. I don’t know, she had a way or rather she was good at messing around with peoples brain not like in a psychic way, it was more like all about her body. In other words you can say she was very sexy, attractive and hard to resist. I have always had to work very had to get what i want but she, things just falls in her lap without having to labor for it. She falls for every guy she knows i like. I mean every guy i dated in high school broke up with me to date her and it was really hurtful for me. I met my husband in my first year of senior high. Its not like i met met him during my first year of being senior , it was more like we started dating during that period in time. It was the first time in my life i felt like my heart was going to explode when anyone touched me or kissed me. I knew i was in love with him and there was no way of saying that i wasn't and i also believed that he loved me just as much as i loved him. But life being as it is, we woke up and reality set in. Although this month made it the 9th year since we have being together, last year was brought us series of problems. I and my boyfriend have been dating for four year now and just last three months he told me, he no longer have feeling for me. He did not just say it like that he made it seem like it was his fault. There is a lot i have to say but i really don't know were to start from. I guess i will have to build my story, that is life story form the begin but will try has much to make it short. I fell in love with my boyfriend Daxson about three years ago and since then we have being living together. We are not married or engaged because like he said he wanted to finish his med school and all that. I was not even bothered because we were in love and as long as there is love who really need marriage and somehow even with all the stress he was going through, he finds the time to make me feel loved always. He is literally the definition caring. But here is the twister i never knew or rather he never told me he was scared for being a father at least we never talk about it because it never crossed our mind and we always i mean always played it safe. I was on my pills and he always used protection. Like they say, i guess when its time its time like, i got pregnant. Looking at it then i will say, that was my greatest mistake in life only now i see a baby is really a blessing. Ok let me go back on track. American is changing for the best i can say this because the gay community just literally got liberated i mean we can officially get married and be part of the the American society. **As at this the month last year my life was a mess i lost everything my wife, my job, my house and even my kids it was really bad that i had to go live with my father. First, i lost my job as a result of covering the bad things my best friend committed and there after everything fell to pieces. My family fell apart i fought with my wife always over every little thing i remember we fought over the fact that my credit card was declined a the shopping mall she was well aware of our situation, that is how i lost my job and all that. I think what made her most mad at me, was that i lost my job because i was protecting my friend. Then i started defaulting on my mortgage payment i could not pay up, i could not pay my bills every responsibility in my house was on my wife. She could not do it all alone she need me to be the man of the house and i failed her and my kids. I was ashamed to call myself a man. Then the worst happened, the bank took my house and my family were thrown out. Once again my wife just felt disappointed in me she could no longer take it she had leave me took with her our kids. I became a confused man with nothing to live for. I started drinking and smoking heavily to top it all i had to move in with my father. I had to listen to him all the time telling me how disappointed he was at me. It was like i was blacklisted by every company here in the United State no one wanted to heir me even with my experience and how good i was with what i do it was impossible for me to get a job i had to do odd job to fund myself and move around town. My wife would not even let see my kids she did not want me around them. She thought i was a bad influence on them. But i was given a reason to keep living by a spell caster named Obudun Magonata. I truly enjoyed this story, I can relate because I'm in the same situation. I wasn't suppose to marry my husband either, God put all the signs in my face and I still disobeyed him and truly paid for it. Always listen to the Lord, he knows what's best for us even if we think it's not! I put my whole hearted trust in him and wait on him to move in my life.

Thank you so very much for sharing something so personal, yet so encouraging. I too was in an emotional abusive marriage for 9 years. I always say I left my mom's house a healthy girl and by the time he was finish with me I was a mess. I was on depression and anxiety meds. I was isolated from my love ones, because everyone thought I was stupid to stay with him. I stayed because of my children but in the end I realized I messed up my kids because they knew everything. Now my daughters don't trust men at all, my son make a promise to never be like his dad. I got remarried again after been a single mom for 8 years, but now I think I made a mistake again. This time this husband feels intimidated by me. He says I am too independent. He is very controlling. I devoted my entire life a 100% into my church ministry. I am now a Youth Minister at my church. I work full time, my babies are grown up now, I have a granddaughter. I should feel fullfilled, but I am not happy. I came online to search for articles on what the church thinks about been divorce more than once as a minister. I came across your article, and I truly believe God wanted me to read it. To all those concerned about your marriage. Follow your heart. If you question your love for your spouse 99.9% your right. That's just the way it is. The problem is that we fear letting go due to the process of separation. We are all entitled in this short life span to live as we please. Divorce isn't such a tragedy. A tragedy's staying in an unhappy marriage, teaching your children the wrong things about love. Nobody ever died of divorce.
